Irente Viewpoint and Magamba Rainforest.

All of this trekking will take you to explore the Usambara Mountains in the northeastern of Tanzania. Landscape, tropical forests and numerous spectacular viewpoints, historical sites and the opportunity to visit local communities development projects, a thorough explanation of the history and life of the local farmers provide a memorable experience.

For shorter stays in the area, we recommend a combination hike to the Irente Viewpoint and Magamba Rainforest, where you can see Colobus monkeys, Usambara two–horned chameleon.

The hike starts right from Lushoto town 9:00 am through small villages, nice landscapes, farming areas and the Magamba-Shume Nature Reserve which is host to huge biodiversity. Experience the natural silence of Usambara’s forests! There is a huge amount of animals like monkeys, birds, butterflies, chameleons.…

Visit an old cave used as a hide out by the Germans during the First World War. Continue climbing up to the peak of Magamba Rainforest at 1850m above sea level and then descend down to the Irente Biodiversity Reserve for the picnic lunch.

Thereafter walk to the famous and spectacular Irente view point, enjoy the breathtaking view over the Maasai plains!

Finally we walk back to town passing several other villages and get in touch with local people on the way.

Usambara Mountains

Explore the Usambara Mountains on the northeastern of Tanzania. Usambara Mountains are a beautiful series of mountain ranges between Moshi (Mount Kilimanjaro region) and Tanga region in the east. Usambara Mountains are home to an unspoiled tropical forest that is rare in East Africa and of great ecological interest. The valuable ecology of the Usambara is seeking increasing protection by conservation organizations and some donor countries like Norway. The tropical forests are home to endemic bird species including the Naduk eagle owl (Bubo vosseleri), the Usambara Akalat (Sheppardia montana), Amani sunbird, green-headed oriole, southern banded snake eagle and the Usambara weaver (Ploceus nicolli). Forest in Usambara Mountains is species that are endemic to the Usambara Mountains include the tree Calodendrum eickii.In addition to learning about the conservation needs of this mountain range and doing some spectacular birding, there are ample opportunities for hiking with stunning viewpoints over the forested mountains. The surrounding region was among the first to be settled in East Africa in 1902 by European farmers, especially German farmers. The nearby town of Amani was a popular German resort for many years in colonial times. Much of the mountain areas are used in the production of coffee, sisal, tea and some species of rice grown in the swampy foothills. The East Usambara Mountains are home to over 30 species of reptiles found nowhere else, 50 tree species and is home to the largest number of species of African Violets

Hiking in usambara

Lushoto is situated in the West Usambara Mountains in the North- east part of Tanzania,During colonial time Lushoto and the Usambara mountains was popular due to their pleasant climate as a holiday resort. Through German influence Lushoto was named “Wilhemstahl” as a result of the German rule at the beginning of the 19th Century large coffee and tea plantations have been cultivated in the southern part of the Mountains and this coffee and tea can be witnessed around the mountains to date. In East Usambara which situated in Muheza Amani forest reserve a botanical garden has been established in 1902 and It is Still one of the Largest and oldest botanical gardens in Africa. The Usambara rain forest is listed as one of the world’s biodiversity hot spots and a haven for plants life. They are also recognized as among the most valuable conservation areas in Africa. The fertile terrain is great for broad agricultural activity vegetables, grapes and many other tropical fruits find an ideal growth here. Many German further more produce domestic products such as cheese, jam, wine, Brown bread and honey.
